The controversial bull-racing sport, Jallikattu, forms the base for this period film, Ilami, which is directed by debutant J Julian Prakash. However, the director says that the film doesn’t touch upon any controversies as Ilami is set in the 18th century, a time when this was the only sport for Tamilians.
“It is a period film set in Madurai. It is based on Jallikattu and how much importance the sport was given back then. The film won’t spark any debate as I have shown the sport during an era when this was considered to be the only Tamilian identity. I have also given a lot of importance to the old culture,” says Julian. Actors Yuvan of Sattai fame and Anukrishna of Kaththi fame will be seen in the lead roles. “There is an underlying romance in this action-drama. Yuvan and Anu went through a massive makeover for the project. Though they are relatively new, both the actors gave it their best. There was a certain fire-based action sequence that Yuvan outperformed. I am really happy with the way the film has come out,” he says. Akhil of Kalloori fame, Kishore and director-actor S Ravi Mariya will be seen in pivotal roles. Julian says, “In fact, I worked as an assistant to Ravi sir. To start off with a period film is tough. But I wanted to make my debut with a big and challenging project like this one.”
The team put up two huge sets in Talakona and Theni. He says, “Obviously, there were no places that resembled the 18th century. So, we re-created a village in these two locations. From the props, costumes to makeup – everything is so realistic. There will be no intimate scenes in the film, too!” Music by Srikanth Deva will be launched next month.
